Our Story

Yorkshire. Several years ago.

Gareth and Ben didn’t know each other, but used to get the same commuter train every day to work. After a few chats on the regular journey, it became apparent that Gareth knew LOADS about climbing and injury management, and Ben was good at maths, technology and bringing ideas to life. A climbing app was suggested and the journey began for real!

Months later, many afternoons were spent together around a laptop discussing research papers, app layouts, acute chronic workload ratios and accessible sizes for buttons for climbers’ thumbs! The problem of how to measure ‘load’ was solved and a prototype model for ‘individual climbers’ was designed, developed, built and shared with a handful of special testers. The ‘coaches’ version of Crux was also scoped out.

It was during these meetings that the name ‘Crux’ was decided upon – it will always be a mystery as to whether Ben or Gareth suggested the name (it wasn’t Gareth, honest!).

Fast forward to the present, and more talented individuals have joined the Crux team or helped them along the way. The Crux for Climbers app has been rebuilt with improved efficiency and more consistent design. Now, Jim, Martin, Ben and Gareth are pushing Crux out to the masses of climbers out there to help them record their climbs, progress and manage their injury risk!

Crux for Climbers is up and running at app.cruxforclimbers.com and is completely free! If there are any features or improvements you would like to see, there is an easy feedback button in the app you can use.

So why wait?! Start logging your climbs now (even historic ones) and track your improvement whilst managing your injury risk!

Gareth has passion for rock climbing and expert knowledge of sports medicine, therapy and musculoskeletal injury management. He is the course director for two programs at the Leeds Beckett University School of Health.

Ben, Martin and Jim have worked together for over a decade bringing digital ideas to life.
